We Found Something Scary! The Scariest Electrical Discoveries

Occasionally, when performing repairs, we come across some scary electrical discoveries. Most of the time, there is no real danger. In most cases, the work is just inefficient or sloppy. Occasionally, we do come across situations which are dangerous. Here are some photos of a pole in Dallas that was retrofitted with residential interior lighting hardware. When we removed the face of the sign, we were stunned. Two pairs of fluorescent bulbs were plugged into 12 electrical sockets. These sockets weren't rated for external usage and presented a serious risk of catastrophic failure. They were at least smart enough to keep electrical wires away from the bottom of sign, where water could collect and short unprotected wiring.(Color Shift Wraps)

Worldwide Chain - Bad Electrical

This happened recently when we took on the electrical and sign maintenance for a large international restaurant chain. We repaired several exterior lights for one local restaurant. The ballast for one of the external lights had been replaced, but the new ballast was larger. The new ballast was simply too large to fit into the protective enclosure. The ballast was then attached to a wall, exposed to the elements. We assume that the previous electrical contractor did not want the correct size ballast, so he used the one on the truck, even though it was not the right fit. It no longer works.

The Ballasts & Tubes Must Match

Over the past year, we have replaced many interior lights on high ceilings. We found mismatched hardware at three different locations to be a factor in the failure of lights. The output of fluorescent lamps and ballasts is rated. The tubes and ballasts must be rated at the same level. If they are not, one or both of them will fail sooner than expected.(Metallic Vinyl Wraps)

Mismatched ballasts are not dangerous, but they can cause a ballast to burn out prematurely. The ballast may overheat, causing the internal switch of the unit to turn off the ballast. The ballast will turn on again once it cools. As a tube overheats, it can develop dark spots at the end. The dark spots that appear when tubes burn out are normal, but they should not occur for months.
